In 1911, Mrs. Alice Maynard and her daughter Orpha came to Delburne from the Joffre area, They opened three tents, there was the living quarters, kitchen and dining area, and the third served as a dormatory for the workmen.
In 1912, construction of the hotel started quickly, it contained six bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, a small sitting room, and a small office. It was called the Maynard House.
In 1914 an addition was added on the east side, that added a large living room and another six bedrooms, kitchen plus dining area. The new living room with a large coal heater and comfortable rocking chairs became the first official drop in centre, a place where people could gather to chat and gossip. A veranda was later built that ran across the entire front.

1917-1928
In 1917, Mrs. Maynard daughter Orpha married Charles Culham, so Mrs, Maynard rented the hotel to the Taylors from Calgary. Two years later it was sold to the T.U. Blair family who operated it until 1921 when it was sold to Wm. Leach.
About a year later it was destroyed by fire. Principal Gordon Foster was the only person to save any of his belongings. He had put them all in his trunk and hurled it through the bedroom window! There was no hotel facilities in Delburne again until 1928!

Mr Traunweiser was the owner of the Empress Hotel in Calgary. In 1928 he built The New Delburne Hotel. He employed Robert Bulloch to operate the New Hotel. Bulloch was the current manager on Traunweiser's ranch near Lousana.
The grand opening of the new hotel was quite the sophisticated affair, with local businessmen and their wives invited to a complimentary luncheon. He brought in his best asian cook, the head waitress from the Empress Hotel was imported for the occasion, to demonstrate to the new operators, the proper way to set up and serve a formal dining room. (White linen table cloths with napkins continued to be used throughout the Bulloch's management).
The large attractive dining room offered excellent meals. There were many personal services made by the Hotel for its customers, it soon became the favorite stopping place for all the travelling salelsmen on Highway 21.

The Hotel had its own generating plant for elecricity and also had indoor plumbing, which was unique in Delburne at the time. The Bullochs operated the hotel for six years. At that time it was sold to Mr. Berton from Calgary and the Bullochs bought and remodelled the Alix hotel. After operating the hotel for a few years, the Bertons rented it to Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Treanor, and returned to Calgary. The Treanors operated the hotel until 1943, at which time it was leased by Geo. Aboussafy from Wetaskiwin, for a short while.
Mr. Alex Ferris purchased the hotel from Mr. Berton in 1944, converted the dining room into living quarters for his family, and added a coffee shop onto the south west side of the building.
In 1950, Alex and Annie Fedorishen from Nordegg purchased the hotel and operated it for 20 years, when ill health forced Alex's retirement. At this time it was sold to Laverne Blair, son of George and Laura Blair, orignally of Delburne.
The Hotel was again sold in 1975, to B. Rollings, who made major exterior renovations, thus greatly enhancing the apperance.
He operated for business for 2 years, then sold it to D. Antonio, who sold to Keith Brennan after a few months..
In 1978, a large addition was built onto the east side, extending and renovating the beverage room.
Shortly therafter, weekly live entertainment was introduced, which was a novelty in Delburne.
At the time of this information about 1980 Mr. Brennan still owned the hotel.
We will continue the history of the Old Delburne Hotel, a little more reaserch is required!
